All the follow-up news from Art in Bloom 2019 Co-Chairs Kris King and Barb Champ on a very successful Art in Bloom! Art in Bloom 2019 Co-Chairs Barb Champ and Kris KingAnother successful Art in Bloom, another successful year of preparation, and most importantly another year filled with the many, many people who contributed to our success. It is our pleasure and privilege to attempt to thank everyone for their amazing efforts, and to highlight some of our accomplishments. It takes a village, and in this case a very large village, to create this amazing spring floral event.First and foremost, a well deserved thank you for the many Art in Bloom committee members who worked tirelessly to make sure our thousands of guests were amazed and thrilled by every detail of Art in Bloom. Producing a fundraiser of this magnitude takes a dedicated, talented, and amazing team of people who volunteer their time and efforts, attend many meetings, and succeed in producing an Art in Bloom that flows seamlessly.Equally important, and incredibly essential, is the partnership of the Friends of the Institute and Art in Bloom with the Mia staff. We dream and they fulfill our dreams; we ask questions and push boundaries and they always provide us with guidance and support.
Their attention to details is meticulous. And their enthusiasm for Art in Bloom before and during the event inspires the Art in Bloom team and our guests. What would Art in Bloom be without the “blooms”? Congratulations and thanks to all of the amazing Pedestal Floral Artists and Commercial Florists who dedicate their time, efforts, and boundless numbers of flowers to be sure Art in Bloom is our community’s ode to spring year after year. Their enthusiasm and talent in creating floral interpretations throughout the museum, and providing the magic of installations that delight and inspire while showcasing the stunning art of Mia.A special thank you to all of our sponsors, with a special mention of Bachman’s, our lead sponsor this year and a part of Art in Bloom for many years. We welcome our new sponsors, and cherish those who have contributed to Art in Bloom regularly. They are such a large part of our successful fundraising.Art in Bloom would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who sold programs, greeted people, worked events as ushers and ticket takers, and did whatever was asked of them every hour of every day. Thank you for your endless enthusiasm, brilliant smiles and willingness to act as our Art in Bloom ambassadors.
We couldn’t do this without you.A few notes about Art in Bloom 2019:. Even an April blizzard didn’t dampen the spirits of our team and the thousands of smiling and appreciative guests who came to experience Art in Bloom, where it is always “spring” inside. We had record attendance Saturday and Sunday, making up for Thursday’s snow day, and icy roads for Wednesday night’s Preview Party. The numbers may have been less than expected, but the hardy people who did show up had a great time!. Thursday morning’s lecture by Joseph Massie was sold out, but many people weren’t able to attend so we filled the auditorium with our hardy (foolhardy?) guests and everyone had a fun and interactive experience.
Joseph is not only one of Europe’s top botanical artists and five-time gold medal winner of the Royal Horticulture Society Chelsea Flower Show—but also an accomplished comedian who charmed the crowd! His Floral Master Class was filled to overflowing, and the resulting arrangements were stunning. Bachman’s Flowers After Hours was, as always, a wonderful evening of fun and flowers.
And the floral couture presentations, emceed by Jason DeRucha of WCCO and Karen Bachman Thull of Bachman’s were as wonderful as ever—if you haven’t seen this, you are missing an evening of fun and laughs as the models parade by in outfits made of flowers. Friday’s Fashion Show and Formal Luncheon once again hit the ball out of the park. This year the Fashion Show strolled through the Modern and Contemporary Art galleries; imagine models strutting through the galleries filled with amazing works of art! A big thanks to the Galleria, and to producer Grant Whitaker, for another stunning event that has become a “must-see” each year at Art in Bloom.
Other notable events included four Mixology Workshops sponsored by Norseman Distillery that were a great success; and floral workshops by our own Jenn Hovland that filled to capacity, with attendees learning how to make an Orchid Kodedama (look that one up!). New on Friday night were pop-up dance performances by the MN Dance Collaborative. Sunday’s Art in Bloom Family Event started out the day with families and children treated to story telling (our book was Dragons Love Tacos), crafts, and more.
As part of Mia’s Family Day this year, with events for children scheduled throughout the day, this kick-off led the charge. And the crowds!. And what would Art in Bloom be without our specially curated selection of gifts and merchandise in our famous Art in Bloom Shop? Many thanks to this fabulous team, who selected the merchandise, set up the beautiful shop, worked the registers, and managed all of the friendly and knowledgeable volunteers who greeted the guests. Finally, we want to welcome our new co-chairs, Therese Blaine and Maria Reamer, as they begin planning Art in Bloom 2020. We wish them all the best and know they’ll do an incredible job!

Bachman’s has been a lead sponsor of Art in Bloom for many years and a valued partner from the first. Sacred Egypt inspired arrangement by Bachman’sEach year during Art in Bloom Bachman’s provides an amazing array of flowers throughout the galleries, corridors, and entryways of Mia, including the Fountain Court and the 24 th Street Entrance. They also create centerpieces inspired by the signature image for the Preview Party, Fashion Show and Formal Luncheon. These centerpieces are then sold after each event to generate more funds for Art in Bloom.Bachman’s Flowers After Hours is one of our most popular events, sponsored and conceived in partnership with Art in Bloom. For years they have produced floral couture “fashion shows,” once including a southern wedding with a bridal party completely clothed in flowers. The dresses weighed up to 50 pounds! This year Bachman’s will base their floral fashions on selected artworks in the museum.
Two shows emceed by WCCO’s Jason DeRusha will take place in the Pillsbury Auditorium, followed by a “meet and greet” in the Fountain Court with Jason and the models. Afterward, they’ll move into the galleries to pose next to the artwork that has inspired their fashion.
It will truly be a night to remember. For the Art in Bloom Family Event (which gets more popular every year) parents and children will gather for an afternoon of free storytelling, activities, and a special craft using flowers donated by— you guessed it—Bachman’s. Each child selects from a wide variety of flowers to create floral headbands, baskets, or whatever is selected for that year. Once finished, they can wear their creations proudly throughout the galleries for the rest of the day. How can you fail to smile when you see them?A true partner, Bachman’s commitment to the Friends doesn’t just happen within the museum walls. Each spring donates 20% of the price of admission to the Friends. In addition, they sponsor a based on the Art in Bloom signature image, with $5 from each ticket going to the Friends. What can we say to honor Bachman’s and their wonderful management team and staff? We are so very thankful for their generosity and enthusiasm for Art in Bloom for so many years.
Working with them each year is like working with family.Thank you, Bachman’s, for your enduring support of Art in Bloom and the Friends of the Institute. Here’s to many more years together! In 2016, he created a show-stopping exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show for Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.Massie also uses his time and talent to support organizations like the British Homeopathic Association and the Homeopathy Action Trust, which raise awareness for homeopathic therapies. As part of these efforts, Massie created a worn by Arlene Phillips (the television star from Great Britain’s Strictly Come Dancing) at the National Television Awards. Living flowers such as clematis, roses, and hydrangea used for homeopathic remedies were sewn into the dress, creating floral couture that was elegant, light, and reflective of Joseph’s signature style within the world of botanicals. After the lecture, participate in Massie’s Floral Master Class, The Art of Dinner Tablescapes.
